U.S. Visitor Information
Information for entering Canada from the United States
Passport not Required* ![]()
Crossing the border into Canada is easy for US travelers. If a US citizen does not have a passport, they must provide proof of their citizenship (an original or certified birth certificate) together with government issued photo identification. Photocopies of either documents do not qualify.
Any person under the age of 18 is required to provide a birth certificate to show citizenship. If traveling with one parent, or even grandparents, it is strongly recommended to carry custody papers and/or a letter from the non-accompanying parent/s authorizing travel.
*Please note that this only applies to entering Canada with a personal vehicle. Air travel still requires a passport.
